Editorial Reviews

All these titles were recorded in New York; some of the early ones feature Benny Goodman's old friend from the days when they both played in Ben Po1lack's band there, Jack Teagarden, trombonist supreme. Also present on these were trumpeter Pee Wee Erwin, replaced on the later ones by Bunny Berigan, and on all but the first three was a fine but little-known trumpet man named Nate Kazebierf. On September 27, the band had a session in Hollywood, recording 'Madhouse' (which is nothing like as lunatic as its name suggests); then they crossed the country to Goodmans' hometown, Chicago, where they opened in the Joseph Urban Room in the Congress Hotel on November 6 (their Palomar contract was extended by a month because of the huge success they made there). Two weeks after opening in the Congress, the band recorded the last three tracks in this set. The Congress Hotel position lasted well into the spring of 1936. Most of these sides were issued in Britain at the time, and were as enthusiastically received there as they had been in the United States. Some who heard and were captivated by them may even have become jazz devotees in later years as a result. On this record, we hear them again in all their original freshness.
